Welfare of the citizenry.

Section 14 (2)(b) of the 1999 Nigeria Constitution (as amended) reads;

the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government…”

The question is, do our government in all spectrum of governance in our society know about this? Do they read this section of the constitution? I do not think they do, if they do as we are made to believe, the citizens wouldn’t have been suffering in the midst of plenty.

The portion of that section does not only talk about security but the welfare of the people. Welfare of the people include inter alia; food security, secured environment for wealth creation, workers receipt of their salaries as when due, encouraging and creating an enably environment for investment to strive etcetera. Sadly, our government down play on this very vital aspect of the citizens lives. A governor of a state instead of looking for alternative means to creat wealth so as to pay salaries and make the people benefit from their own wealths,  what they do is to pounce on the civil servants either to stop paying  their salaries or threating to sack them. The others that are managing to survive doing their various businesses in the harsh economy meliu are strangling faced with multiple taxations.   The very poor ones among them are humiliated, forced and beating up to pay their taxes on the pure water or ‘akara’ they sell. They make the environment so tensed so much that even the angel would cry. And yet their security votes are not cut, their salaries are paid as when due. They travel abroad like no man’s business collecting their estacodes and yet the people they lead wallop in squalor. What an irony of a misplaced priority. God help us!

If our government officials could settle down and ready to be schooled in the art of governance,  then things would turn around for good.  Then the citizen interest would become paramount in their policy making and implimentation.

The way it is presently, those in the government are not ready. Most of them are not really educated in the sense of the word. If they could drop their sentiment and have a new orientation knowing that the seats they now occupy are not theirs therefore not permanent, things would work, but until then things would go on turning round in a circle.

  1. They have always seen governance as their own property therefore can manipulate the polity to their favour, and anyone who dares to challenge them would be kept in the cooker…
